What Is the 85% Taxi Fare?
The “85% taxi fare” is a common offer in Hong Kong's taxi trade. Put simply, you only pay 85% of the normal fare. For example, if the meter shows $300, the 85% fare is about $255 (indicative only).
Real example: Prince Edward to Tuen Mun, meter $260, 85% fare $221 (subject to traffic and tunnel tolls that day; confirm when booking).
The idea behind it: taxi drivers or fleets are willing to offer a discount to get more business. On long-distance trips especially, a long fare is better for the driver than cruising the streets hoping for passengers, so they are happy to take a smaller margin on more trips.
NovaTaxi's 85% fare offer applies to longer urban / New Territories trips (about 85% of the meter). Airport and port trips use a flat rate instead. Just mention that you'd like the 85% fare when you book, and we'll arrange it.
When Is the 85% Fare Most Useful?
The 85% fare doesn't suit every situation. Here are the cases where it works well:
- Long cross-district trips: for example, Hong Kong Island to the New Territories, or Kowloon to the North New Territories. The normal fare is higher, so the savings are most noticeable.
- Night time: when there is no public transport at night and you have to take a taxi, the 85% fare is even more worthwhile.
- Family trips: several people sharing a taxi is already better value than taking the MTR separately, and the 85% fare makes it even better value.
For airport, Shenzhen Bay, Lok Ma Chau and HZMB trips where you want a locked price, use a flat rate (not the 85% fare). See the price table on the Airport page and the other route pages.
85% Fare or Flat Rate?
These popular airport / port routes use a flat rate (not the 85% fare). For the actual fares, please see each route page's price table:
| Route | Fare |
|---|---|
| Mong Kok → Airport | See the price table on the Airport page |
| Causeway Bay → Lok Ma Chau Control Point | See the price table on the Lok Ma Chau page |
| Tsim Sha Tsui → Shenzhen Bay Port | See the price table on the Shenzhen Bay page |
| Sha Tin → Airport | See the price table on the Airport page |
| Tsuen Wan → HZMB Port | See the price table on the HZMB page |
On longer urban / New Territories trips, the 85% fare saves you about 15% of the fare. If you take a few long taxi trips a month, the savings add up over a year.

Things to Note
- Where it applies: the 85% fare applies to longer urban / New Territories trips (see the 85% Discount page for details); airport and port routes use a flat rate. Short urban trips may not qualify; please ask when you book.
- Peak times: you can still book the 85% fare on holidays, weekends and at busy times, but we recommend booking early so a car is available.
- How it's charged: the 85% fare is based on the meter, so the actual charge depends on traffic and tunnel tolls (one-way tunnel toll only, no return tunnel toll). No hidden extras. For a price fixed in advance, choose a flat rate.
- Cancellation: if you need to cancel, please let us know as early as possible.
- Not combinable with other offers: the 85% fare can't be used together with other promotions.
